Interview with Paulina Ulrich

Welcome! Today I am very happy to welcome Paulina Ulrich, author of The Flightless Bird Series, to my blog and thank her for granting me an interview!! I hope you all enjoy the interview, and pick up her series!!

 [New+Bio+Pic.jpg]

Support Indie Authors: Thank you so much for sitting down and doing an interview with me!!
Paulina Ulrich: Thanks so much for having me!!

SIA: When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
PU: Thanks so much for having me! This is awesome. I’m not sure there ever a time where I decided I was one. This is going to sound cheesy but honestly, I’ve always been one. I have home videos of myself from my childhood sitting at the kitchen table writing stories, drawing pictures, and stapling them together like books. Not to mention my parents always told me I was quite the chatter box. I was always talking about my dreams or telling stories. If not, I was scribbling them on paper. It wasn’t really until high school when I decided to take my career seriously. I have boxes of manuscripts from things I’ve written. It’s scary. Writing is in my blood! I definitely live for it.

SIA: Is there a book that inspired you to write? Or was it a person?
PU: I feel like if you’re a writer, you definitely have to be a reader. I love books! I devour them constantly but it wasn’t any book that really inspired me to write. It really comes down to two people who really pushed me to take my writing seriously. My aunt Heather who is like my second mom and my best friend Adrienne. They’ve been with me through a lot in my life and even when I felt like giving up, they really shoved me back on my feet and believed in me. Not sure where I would be without them.

SIA: What is your favorite genre to write in?
PU: My favorite genre to write in…well at this point in time is young adult paranormal romance or I suppose young adult in general. It changes from time to time but with everything I had going right now with the Flightless Bird series and my upcoming new series The Chosen series, I’m really rooted in the paranormal and naturally I like a little romance so that’s a must! I love exploring the angst of the teenage years and the emotional highs and lows. These years can be such a traumatic time! My teenage years weren’t exactly spectacular and I know a lot of people can relate with a rough decade of the teens so I enjoy revisiting those years to write a story filled with ups and downs but with an *ideal* happy ending because there aren’t enough happy endings in real life sometimes.

SIA: What is your favorite genre to read?
PU: This is so hard! I enjoy so many genres…I’ll have to settle on anything YA genre right now. Lately I’ve been swept up in the hype surrounding so many great YA reads that have come out. I’m always a sucker for a good YA romance so I read a lot of those too…

SIA: What has been the best advice you have received when it comes to writing?
PU: The best advice has been: to just keep writing and stay true to yourself. Many people have so many different opinions and paths they think I should follow but the advice that comes through to the end is always to keep writing despite what others think. So I’m doing just that! I realize the whole ‘true to yourself’ sounds cheesy but it’s honestly great advice. I don’t listen to what others think I should do or their opinions of me. I write because I love it and being a writer is who I am. That will never change.

SIA: Who is your favorite writer at the moment?
PU: Yikes! There are so many. I recently finished Onyx by Jennifer L Armentrout and I really enjoy her work with the Lux series. But I’m also anticipating Unlikely Allies by Tiffany King and…alright I’m going to stop myself before I get going. I can’t decide!

SIA: Do you feel online book reviewers help or hinder the sales of your book(s)?
PU: I think online book reviewers are great and they definitely help sales for authors through their posts. Reviewers are so endearing and truthful. If someone is passionate about my book and wants to blog about it, I encourage it! If someone doesn’t like it, well that’s life and everyone has their own opinions. As long as people are honest then they are entitled to say what they want. But a good review never hurt anyone! I always appreciate good feedback!

SIA: If you weren’t a writer, what would you be doing?
PU: Good question because I have no idea really. I was hoping I could pull off the whole rockstar thing (I’ve been told I have quite the voice when I do sing which is rare) but I think that’s a little out of my league now. So to answer the question I guess…I would have been a historian. I’m such a history geek. I’m definitely the girl who announces to a room full of people what happened on this day and in what year. I’m kind of like a walking history book! Literally. All my friends ask me questions for their classes like: “Hey Paulina! When, where, and who signed the Treaty of Versailles? When was the French Revolution? What happened at the Battle of Waterloo?” Not even with a second thought I know the answer like the back of my hand. Not sure if that’s really normal or not…*laughs* My major is Creative Writing but I’m a History minor…so I could still probably pull something off with history while writing at the same time. I love history but not nearly as much as I love writing.

SIA: If you could switch places with any author for a week, who would it be?
PU: Any author…Hmm…I’d have to say Richelle Mead. I really enjoy her work and her writing style. The knowledge she uses about myths, legends, and folklore and are really interesting and I like how she incorporates it into her writing. Not to mention that she’s just an all around awesome writer!

SIA: Bonus – Favorite Ice Cream flavor?
PU: Daiquiri ice from Baskin Robbins. I could eat that stuff all day! Actually, I did go get some in a waffle cone today. Yum!

3 Fall into the Otherside Short Story Series - Denise Grover Swank

I’m kicking off another short story series for  On the Otherside in anticipation of the release of THERE in December. Each story will be a prequel to HERE and give you a little insight to the characters lives leading up to Julia’s accident and the beginning  the book.

This will also be a chance for readers of my other series to get a glimpse into the  characters from On the Otherside. While HERE is a young adult book and appropriate for younger preteen readers, it’s not juvenile in its tone or context. It’s a story with sixteen and seventeen year old main characters but the emotional depth you’ve come to expect from my books (at least I hope you have) is still there. In fact,I consider HERE to be my best written book to date if you’re looking for pretty words. I think the story is pretty good too, but then again I’m kind of partial.  In any case, if you haven’t read HERE you can check out the stories and see if it’s a series you want to try.

The stories will ONLY be available to newsletter subscribers. I may bundle them together and publish them at some point, but that itself is a bit of a hassle and not my intention.  I enjoy writing the stories and it’s a gift to my readers. I will post a link and a password to read the story on my website each month from September to December.  Here’s a list of the stories I plan to write:

September: Once in a Lifetime, Reece POV, the story behind the painting in his room. (Note: this story was originally a guest blog post)
October: Julia POV, Julia and Monica before the accident that killed Monica
November: Evan POV, when Evan realizes he has the chance to see Julia again
December: Reece POV, when Julia meets Reece in the church before the accident

**Personal note: OMG SO EXCITED!!!!**

Cover Reveal: Of Blood and Bone (The Minaldi Legacy, #1) - Courtney Cole

My next book is the first in a new series, something very different from anything I’ve done before.  This will be a contemporary series for adults.  It involves sexual content, blood, some violence and a lot of dark romance.  I really, really hope you like it.

As a little boy, Luca Minaldi was told he was a monster.
As an adult, he knows it is true.
He lives in Malta, a fairytale-like place filled with sunshine and sea, beauty and secrets.  And Luca’s darkest of secrets is the best kept of them all.Eva Talbot arrives in Malta for the summer to finish up her doctoral dissertation.
When she meets Luca, a mysterious and handsome shipping tycoon, there is an instant attraction, a disturbing and beautiful energy that she has never felt before.  But she senses the darkness that lives within him.
Eva is hired to care for his mother, who suffers from dementia, but it is Luca who Eva will eventually risk everything to save.  Her life becomes a swirling chaos of darkness and romance, of secrets and mystery.  And the question that emerges will become the most important answer of all.
Can she save Luca from the darkness that plagues him without losing herself?
The answer is a matter of life or death.

What I'm working on...- Abbi Glines

Existence fans know that I am currently getting Ceaseless ready for its September 18 release.

But what's next?

Preston (Marcus Hardy's best friend and side character in Breathe, Because of Low and While It Lasts) will be getting his own story. There is a lot to this guy no one knows. He comes off as a care free party boy but is he?

First time I'm announcing this: I am adding 10,000 words to both The Vincent Boys and The Vincent Brothers. There will be new scenes in both books and some other scenes will be more detailed...
Not sure on a rerelease date yet but sometime later this year hopefully.

Options will be an urban fantasy mature YA/New Adult book that will be book one in a trilogy. It releases February 5, 2013

THEN... Cage and Eva get one more story. Hopefully by April of 2013.

That's my line up for right now. Covers and book summary reveals will be late September for Preston's story and late October for Cage & Eva's #2.

Support Indie Authors: Welcome and thank you for being my very first interview!!
Berinn Rae: Thanks for having me, Ashley!!

SIA: Did you always want to write romance novels instead of any other genre?
BR: Growing up, I’d always read science fiction and fantasy. When I started to write, I figured I’d stick to those genres, while focusing on strong heroines. But as my stories unfolded, I realized that my leading ladies liked to enjoy a bit of passion, and so I discovered my writing leaned toward the romance genre instead. And I’ve had absolutely no regrets. Romance has some of the savviest readers out there!

SIA: What is it about romance novels that speak to you?
BR: I crave the HEA (Happily Ever After) or at least HFN (Happily For Now). There’s enough disappointment in the real world, and a little escapism is a needed break.

SIA: What would be your dream book to write?
BR: I’ve always dreamed of writing an epic science fiction with romantic elements. What I envision would have world-building like Star Trek, grittiness like The Walking Dead, and fun like Firefly.

SIA: If you weren’t a writer, what would you be doing?
BR: Good question! I wouldn’t want to do anything else! But if I had to, I suppose I’d do something full time in the aviation industry rather than fly just for fun. If I wasn’t a writer, I’d be reading a whole lot more books!

SIA: What are your thoughts on book review websites?
BR: I love book review sites! I think it’s wonderful that passionate readers take the time to share their thoughts on books with others. I’ve bought plenty of books after reading good (and bad!) reviews. And I give kudos to the reviewers—it takes a lot of time to review a book and passion to share it with the world.

SIA: What is your current favorite book, and your all-time favorite book?
BR: Tough question! Dream Chaser by Sherrilyn Kenyon because it was my first paranormal romance read, which hooked me heart and soul on the genre. It’s not the best written book in the world, but it literally changed my life. My all-time favorite would be The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It’s the book that taught me the secret to life, the universe, and everything.

SIA: Who is your favorite author?
BR: Another tough question! Trying to narrow it down to one is as hard as it is picking a favorite book. I’ll go with Gena Showalter since she consistently puts out good books, and I’ll stop everything I’m doing to read her latest.

SIA: Do you prefer e-book or paperback?
BR: I’ve finally made the switch to e-book and buy nearly all books that way. Every now and then, I’ll also buy a copy for my bookshelves. I find e-books are ideal for travel (I carry my entire library with me everywhere), and they’re great for clearing space in my house.

SIA: Out of the books you have written, which one has been your favorite?
BR: Hm. Stealing Fate was a blast to write. Maybe because it was a novella so it went fast, or maybe because it was my first time self-publishing. Regardless, I enjoyed the freedom in writing it.

SIA: Random Question – Favorite flavor of ice cream?
BR: Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!

Thank you again so much Berinn, NOW time for the giveaway!!
